Central 100: Celebrating a Century of the Light of Learning

Marking the centennial of one of Los Angeles’s most beloved landmarks, this exhibition celebrates the depth and distinctiveness of Central Library’s subject departments.

Thought Projects designed, contracted and oversaw the fabrication, and installed the exhibition’s signature elements: eleven custom-built books, each seven feet tall, housing display vitrines with integrated lighting. Working in close partnership with the curatorial and graphic design team, Thought Projects led the design of the vitrines and managed the production through delivery and installation of the final casework.

East Los Streetscapers: World Encounter over El Arroyo Seco

In 1994, as Los Angeles prepared to host the World Cup for the first time, East Los Streetscapers artists David Botello and Wayne Healy created this vivid mural to capture the city’s global moment — a celebration of sport, community, and the multicultural energy that defines Los Angeles. The games’ return to Los Angeles in 2026 became an opportunity to revisit this remarkable work and display it in the library’s atrium.

Thought Projects curated and managed all aspects of the project including: identifying the artwork; coordination with artists; identifying a display location; loan forms and other paperwork; art transport, rigging and installation; and interpretive text.

Ashley Walker: Threads of Los Angeles

Ashley Walker, the Library’s 2025 Creator in Residence, drew on the Library’s historical archives — documents, manuscripts, and photographs — to create Threads of Los Angeles, a six-piece fashion line that embodies the layered history of the city. The collection was presented first at the Central Library and then at branch libraries across the city.

Thought Projects designed, fabricated, and installed the plinths and vitrines.

East Los Streetscapers: Hacia al Norte

Hacia al Norte, a monumental 65-foot mural on canvas by the East Los Streetscapers — artists David Botello, Wayne Healy, and Rich Raya — was commissioned in 1991 for a factory cafeteria. The sweeping narrative of journey and arrival is a visual celebration of the layered immigrant stories that define Los Angeles. It required careful transport, condition assessment, and installation.

Thought Projects curated and managed all aspects of the project including: identifying the artwork; coordination with artists and lender; exhibition administration; art transport; design, fabrication, and installation of custom display plinth; interpretive text; and coordination with design team.

Roosevelt High School History Walk

This bilingual public history project traces the rich, century-long history of Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights. Commissioned by LAUSD as part of the school’s campus modernization program, the project combined archival research, oral histories, and hands-on student engagement — resulting in an outdoor public history activation that brought important stories alive for a new generation of students and community members. The project consists of five outdoor interpretive stations organized around specific themes, and pavers embedded with narrative content tracing the school’s history.

Thought Projects served as content research and curatorial lead on this nuanced, bilingual public history project.
